Since the Academy
draws its student body from all over the country and also outside, it
caters for a wide range of electives to meet the interests of all sections
and communities belonging to different cultural, social and ethnic backgrounds.
In any academic session,
the Academy may not offer a particular elective subject unless at least
six students opt for the subject. On the advice of the Academys
Academic Council a student may also be refused admission to a particular
elective, if his academic preparation is considered inadequate. All students
must satisfy themselves that the combination of electives of their choice
is available and is currently offered, before seeking admission.
Four subjects of the
following list will have to be chosen as academic counsellor in the campus
for guidance in choosing their electives.

Scheme of
examination and achievement reports
It becomes important
to find out if the objectives of scheme of studies are being achieved
by the Academy. In order to do so, the Academy follows a scheme of testing
which is modern in approach and easy to operate. It is based on concept
of evaluation development by the NCERT and requires the programme of evaluation
to be:
- Objective: It should
aim at specifically thought of objectives
- Comprehensive:
Providing for a coverage of all the objectives
- Continuous: Ensuring
quick feedback
- Dynamic: Being
integrated with teaching.
Keeping these in mind,
the Academy has adopted a scheme of examination consisting of two parts:
| Formulative
evaluation |
Summative
evaluation |
This
is a form of continuous assessment done by the teachers and based
on the following principles:
- Every
student is tested weekly.
- Every
subject is tested monthly.
- Parents
are informed quarterly.
The main
tool used for formulative evaluation is a unit test which is
a written test covering one unit of the course and is administered
by the teachers without disturbing the Academy time-table.
|
This
is in the form of a final examination covering the entire syllabus
taught during the year. For the purpose of promotion, equal weightage
is given to formulative evaluation and summative evaluation. In
order to implement the scheme of formulative evaluation, the syllabus
in each subject is divided into five units. The teaching and testing
of the unit are regulated as follows:
Units I
and II in each subject are taught up to September and unit tests
carrying 20 marks for each subject are given by the subject
teacher. A report is sent to the parents in the first week of
October.
Units II
and IV in each subject are taught from October to December and
unit tests are given by the subject teacher. Each unit test
carries 20 marks. A report is sent to the parents on the eve
of winter break.
Unit V in
each subject is taught and revision work from the whole course
is undertaken from January to February. One of the units in
each subject is tested through a unit test which carries 20
marks.
There is
a final examination in March covering the entire course. A report
is sent to the parents in the first week of April.
|
The students are promoted
to the next class as per promotion rules of the Academy in March.
If the performance
of any student is considered unsatisfactory, he may have to repeat his
studies in the same standard. This eventuality will however be rare, as
the student will be given special remedial instruction whenever its necessity
is indicated by the continuous evaluation.
